A joint venture with MAC (Midlands Art Centre), Birgmingham, UK
APRIL 30 - MAY 22 2005
The Ekeby Qvarn Art Space (EQAS) is located about 10 km north from Uppsala in the historic setting of Uppland. As a contemporary art space, the EQAS was established in 1991 and functions to offer exhibiting artists and the visiting public a new and different art experience in the historic setting of Ekeby Qvarn. The EQAS distinguishes itself by emphasizing art's historical, cultural, and social contexts, with experimentation and interpretation as integral parts of programmatic planning. Thus, in addition to being a place to view the works and actions of contemporary art, the Space serves as a laboratory in which a broader view of an object's environment enriches our understanding of its contribution to contemporary life and culture.
Since 1994 Ekeby Qvarn Art Space organized six mayor projects with the name EVENTA. These exhibitions encompass aspects of all the visual arts: painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking, photography, architecture and decorative arts, video, film, and performance
A large number of artists from all over the world were invited to take part, artists from Asia, Africa, South and North America as well as from most European countries.
In order to establish a direct relationship to the local landscape the artists created many installations and interventions in- and outdoors.
The participation of a large number of artists, curators, specialists etc. from several countries led to an ever increasing interest, not only in Sweden but also from abroad, for these events.
With the international emphasis and participation of artists of many national, ethnical, cultural backgrounds, the EVENTA exhibitions had a strong element of integration as well as diversity and the search of identity in today’s world continuously building on the strengthening relationship between artists, the public and community.
In this context we invited the British artist Peter Grego to create a project as part of a new curatorial strategy for the Eventa exhibitions which includes separate exhibitions under the working title Eventa SOS. These projects are supported by the Municipality of Uppsala, Kulturnämnden and Kulturfonden. English Journey will be shown at Ekeby Qvarn Art Space from April 30 to May 22s and is also a joint venture with MAC(Midlands Art Centre) in Birmingham.
